Dining Etiquette
. Always sit straight, and keep your elbows off the table,preferably keeping your hands on your lap while not eating.
. Never chew your food with your mouth open.
. It is always good manners to swallow the food before speaking.
. Do not gulp down your food. Not only it is unattractive, but also unhealthy.
. Ensure that you keep pace with others, and not linger over your first course while others are already waiting for their dessert.
. When you find soemthing stuck between your teeth, don't pick at it while at the table. You can excuse yourself for a while, and dislodge it is the bathroom.
. Between courses, do not light up your cigarette, as it affects the others' taste buds, or it may be irritant to them, especially if they are allergic to smoke.
. Do not use plate as an ash tray.
. See that your personal belongings like a wallet or purse, keys, spectacle, etc. are off the table.
. Do not use the salt and pepper before tasting your food. This can be very offensive to the person who has cooked the meal and is seated among you.
. Never blow on an any hot liquid, but wait till it is cool enough for you to drink it.
. Always pass the food to the right, unless someone on your left especially asks for a particular dish near by you.
. When you have finished eating, do not push your plate away.
, Also make sure you do not push your chair back.
. If a person has some medicine after food, etiquette requires that you do not enquire about the reasons.
. If inadvertently you belch, cover your mouth with a napkin and say"Excuse me" to no one in particular.
. Avoid asking people where they are going once they leave the table.
. When you want to butter your toast, take some of it on your plate, and then spread it on the toast.
.If you spill something , don't panic or agitate, but quietly blot up what you can.
THE USE OF FORK AND CUTLERY
. When you use a fork and spoon, the former is held in the left hand while the latter is held in the right hand.
. While using a knife and fork also, the fork is in the left hand, while the right hand is used for the knife for cutting.
. At a sit down meal, generally two pieces of cutlery is used at a time, though the other pieces are also laid on the table.
. While using a fork with a knife, the prongs face downwards with the fork held in the left hand.
. While using a knife, held in the right hand, cover the end of the knife with your palm, resting the index finger about an inch down the handle to help your press down firmly.
. Avoid cutting the entire portion of the food into small pieces before eating.Cut one piece at a time. Eat this piece before cutting the other one.
. Once you pick up a piece of cutlery, it should not touch the table again.
. If you are resting between meals, cross your cutlery, the fork on top with the prongs facing down.
. Fish is generally eaten, using a fork and knife.
